JEFFREY OSBORNE
Born in Providence in 1948, singer, songwriter and drummer Jeffrey Osborne is one of the most successful musicians to emerge from the Ocean State. His professional music career began in 1970 when he joined the touring soul band Love Men, Ltd. as their drummer. The group relocated to California and joined up with Jeffrey’s brother Billy who had been acting as musical director for the Friends of Distinction. They changed their name to L.T.D. (Love, Togetherness & Devotion) and signed with A&M Records in 1974 with Jeffrey on drums, Billy on keyboards and the two sharing the vocals. By 1976, Jeffrey had moved out front to become the band’s primary lead vocalist and they were at the top of the charts with “Love Ballad” (Billboard #1 R&B and #20 Hot 100). This began a four year run of hit records and the group mined a long string of gold and platinum singles and albums. Jeffrey left the band to pursue a solo career in 1980. He stayed at A&M and in 1982 released his first solo album, the self-titled Jeffrey Osborne, which contained two across-the-board smashes, “I Really Don’t Need No Light” and “On The Wings Of Love.” That marked the beginning of a long string of hit records including five gold and platinum albums which continues forty years into his solo career. He is a dedicated philanthropist whose foundation, The Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity Classic, presents several annual events which benefit non-profit organizations who support a continued push for music and the arts to children and their families, as well as those who provide a safe-haven for families in need. The foundation also awards music- and art-based scholarships and a humanitarian award to deserving individuals and organizations.
